Eliminating the pre existing condition limitation will increase the cost of insurance dramatically. If the government (by the way, that is all of us that are paying taxes, yup, we are the Government) does not subsidize it the costs go through the roof and nobody can afford them.
Only some type of mandatory coverage rule would limit adverse selection otherwise you would only buy insurance after you got sick.
Too bad for the insurance industry but they brought the majority of this on themselves. Of course, the Government helped it along by requiring insurers to cover things they never should of and that also drove up the cost.
Basically, until you get a handle on hospital charges it won't matter whether or not you have a public or private Plan. Someone has to pay those medical bills and they just keep going up. Does anyone know what your local hospital charges for a semi private room? How about the other charges associated with your stay? Probably not but that is what is not sustainable.
